Defining post natal

Latin for ‘after birth’, from post meaning “after” and natalis meaning “of birth” or post natal, is the period beginning immediately after the birth of a child and extending for about six weeks.

Understanding Post Natal Depression

Approximately 25% - 85% of postpartum women will experience the “blues” for a few days after giving birth. Between 7% - 17% may experience clinical depression, with a higher risk among those women with a history of clinical depression.

Over 1 in 100 women develop Posttraumatic stress disorder following childbirth; many more suffer from one or more of the symptoms. PTSD may occur after severe complications during delivery, but personality characteristics and previous psychiatric illness has also been associated with the development of posttraumatic stress symptoms as a result of initial post natal depression.

What the experts say

Fountainhead Method Life Coach and Author, Jackie Hall and post natal depression expert explains,

“Post Natal Depression can happen to anyone. It is not governed by financial status, locality, education, health or race. It is determined solely because of what someone believes about themselves and how they have attached their self-worth to getting their life (or motherhood) right. That is, only when they can achieve certain things or expectations do they deem themselves 100% worthy. It is this inaccurate view of themselves and life that creates PND and consequently the physical chemical imbalance in the brain. “ *

Solutions at Fountainhead Retreat

Although modern medicine argues that a chemical imbalance in the brain is present in all cases of depression, at Fountainhead we have learned (by working with our guests) Post Natal Depression is actually caused by inaccurate beliefs you have about yourself and your life, which are present before the physical manifestation of the chemical imbalance. This is because of the association between the mind and body.

Does this sound like you?

Why Bother. I am giving up. I am a failure. Every time I try to do the right thing I just stuff it up, so there’s no point even trying anymore. I’m always down on myself. I’m such a bad mother and I’m ruining my child’s life. I feel like a loser. I’m worth-less. My life is going nowhere. I’m always getting let down.

Quite often when we actually have children, we find that our expectations cannot be met, and this is where the downward spiral. Life hasn’t gone the way you planned and you determine that this means something negative about you. You feel worth-less. You feel like you should be doing a better job and that your kids are missing out on a better life.

We first teach you how this thinking is inaccurate, and how it is the actual cause of your depression, rather than the situation itself. We then teach you to discover and rediscover the aspects of your life that give you energy, power and confidence. You quickly learn that your life is a journey filled with ups and downs. You learn that you can actually gain when you lose. You lean to stop blaming others and yourself. And most importantly, you learn your self-worth can only be taken away, if you allow it to be. We teach you how to do just that - ways to guard, protect and nurture your self-worth.

These ideas may sound new and even foreign right now, but when you leave Fountainhead after a 21-28 day program, this positive way of thinking and approaching life will guide you and your child to a depression free state of mind. Being the only certified organic health retreat in the world will also help to replenish the nutrients and energy your have shared with your child through birth.

You will leave, rested, revitalized and ready to stop doing post natal depression.
