Health and Wellness Retreat, Treating Teenage Depression
What Is Teenage Depression?
The symptoms and signs of teenage depression can be hard to spot, hormones raging through them can spark angry outbursts, moodiness and sadness. But when does this turn from usual adolescent behaviour to something more serious?
The signs of teenage depression are very different, overwhelming feelings of anger and despair can impact on their personality. They may have always relied on their parents or caregivers to recognise their suffering, but they now feel the need to pull away from this support. Few teenagers are aware of how to seek assistance on their own and very often they feel they have nowhere to turn.
Warning signs for depression in teens
Irritability is one of the signs of teenage depression and is often predominant – they may be hostile, easily frustrated, or prone to uncharacteristic outbursts.
Frequent complaints about stomach aches, headaches or other physical ailments can be an indication of depression, especially once a physical exam does not reveal a medical cause.
Depression in teens often results in being crushed by feelings of worthlessness and low self-esteem, making them extremely sensitive to criticism and vulnerable to rejection and failure.
Some teenagers keep up with their friendship groups while trying to deal with depression while some will begin to hang around with a different crowd or socialise less than before.
Effects of Teen Depression
The symptoms of teenage depression may become too overwhelming and may result in talks about running away and even going through with it. This is often a cry for help and should always be treated seriously. Self-medication in the form of substance abuse and other high-risk behaviours such as reckless driving, binge drinking and unsafe sex are all common signs of teenage depression and can impact on the family and the community. Social Media and Internet addiction can also aggravate the situation, making them feel isolated. Cyber-bullying can lead to major problems such as self-loathing, self-harm, eating disorders and in some cases suicide. Timely help can make a huge difference and our Holistic Therapy Programs are designed for just that.

How Our Therapists Help Alleviate Teenage Depression
Our unique program has educational tools and techniques that examines the way a young person suffering a stress-related condition, such as teenage depression, is thinking and processing the events of their life. This is based on the core belief structures they mainly develop at an early age and how the processing of reality through these core belief structures – or as we call them, lenses – causes unwanted emotional symptoms and behaviour. This holistic therapy process helps identify where the person learnt their core beliefs on life as well as how they incorrectly measure their self-worth. The information learnt in this process takes the sufferer’s incorrect or incomplete beliefs, which are based on misinterpretations of the past, and re-educates them to look at the same past experiences objectively. The goal is to understand, learn and grow from past experiences which change the underlying cause of their unwanted emotions and long-term behaviour.
Mindfulness Training for helping with teenage depression
This technique has existed and been treating depression for millennia but has only been explained scientifically in the last twenty years.
“Mindfulness produces positive effects on psychological well-being that extend beyond the time the individual is practicing it. Over the last three decades, mindfulness practices have been increasingly incorporated into programs, to take advantage of these benefits. A large body of research has established the effectiveness of these mindfulness-based interventions in reducing symptoms of a number of disorders, including anxiety, depression, substance abuse, eating disorders and chronic pain, as well as improving well-being and quality of life. Mindfulness involves the development of awareness of present-moment experience with a compassionate, non-judgmental stance. It has been suggested that this process is associated with a perceptual shift, in which one’s thoughts and feelings are recognised as events occurring in the broader field of awareness”

How The Fountainhead Retreat can help you deal with and overcome teenage depression, and change your life
Help with teen depression is our specialty and we can teach you how to beat your depression. When it comes to how you interpret your life and depression, you only ever confirm or change what you know by gathering new information from life experiences and events. It is how you interpret that information and what you learn (or do not learn in most cases) that exacerbates, aggravates and elevates your depression.
During your program, we guide those with teenage depression through a unique learning from the collection, evaluation and interpretation of information and beliefs you have gathered throughout their lifetime and the current information inflaming their depression. In a sense, they become a student, an inquisitive learner reflecting and researching themselves, objectively and accurately. Ultimately, they take control of their depression by taking control of their personal development.
Within our peaceful and relaxing surroundings, we work with you, day by day, teaching you how to initiate a new way of thinking. This approach is accompanied by nutritious certified organic meals cooked by our passionate chefs, and body work facilitated by our professional personal trainers and massage therapists. Our Therapists have been selected as much for their ability to counsel and connect with you empathetically as they are for their experience in working with people like you.
Please note: Clients under the age of 18 will require a 24-hour Chaperone for the entirety of their program. The Chaperone role can be shared by family members and a professional staff Chaperone.
